Multiple Instagram accounts on iPhone
How to Use Multiple Instagram Accounts on One iPhone at the Same Time
Instagram lets you add up to five accounts to the app and switch between them, but only one is open at a time, and a sixth doesn't fit. That's enough for a personal account and a side project. Shops, creators with niche accounts, social media managers and agencies usually need more: a brand account, a shop account and a personal one, or twenty accounts for clients, all signed in together. On iPhone, the way to get there is to install separate copies of Instagram, each signed in to its own account. Here's what the official app allows, how the options compare, how to set up as many copies as you need from Safari, and how to keep a busy multi-account setup organized.
What Instagram allows: five accounts, one at a time
Instagram's own account switcher lets you add up to five accounts to one app. You switch from your profile, and only the account you switched to is open; the others stay added but out of view until you switch back. It's free, it's official, and for one person with two or three profiles it works well.
It gets awkward as soon as several accounts need attention through the day. Every reply, comment or post starts with a switch, it's easy to act from the wrong account when you're moving fast, and once you reach five there's no room for another. Instagram in a mobile browser can hold one more account per browser session, but with fewer features than the app.
Two Instagram accounts are where most people start, not where they stop. If you need several accounts signed in at the same time, each one a tap away, the way to do it on one iPhone is to install separate copies of Instagram: a dual Instagram setup that doesn't stop at two.
Who outgrows Instagram's account switcher
The switcher was built for one person with a couple of profiles. These are the setups that run into its limits first:
- Shops and sellers: a main store account, a sale or outlet account, one account per market or language, and the owner's personal account on top.
- Creators with niche accounts: a main account plus separate accounts for a recipe series, travel clips, a photography portfolio or a fan community, each with its own audience.
- Social media managers: their own accounts plus every brand they look after, which on its own is often more than five.
- Agencies: a team handling dozens of client accounts, often on shared work phones, where each account should stay signed in and ready for whoever picks up the phone.
Brand, shop and personal accounts, each in its own Instagram
iClone signs separate copies of Instagram for your iPhone. Each copy has its own app ID and keeps its own data on the phone, so each one stays signed in to a different account, and the Instagram you got from the App Store keeps working next to them. A common setup is your personal account in the official app and every work account in a copy of its own: brand in one, shop in another, each client in the next.
The Multi-clone plan allows up to 50 copies of Instagram on one iPhone, all signed in at the same time, and it comes with Threads, so the brands that post there are covered too.
How separately signed copies differ from App Store “dual” apps and other cloning methods is covered in our guide to clone apps on iPhone. Here's how copies compare with the other ways to run more than one Instagram account:
| Option | What you get | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Instagram's account switcher | Up to 5 accounts in one app, free | One open at a time; no room for a sixth |
| Instagram in a browser | One more account in Safari next to the app | One account per browser session; fewer features than the app |
| A second phone | Complete separation | Another device, and often another number, to pay for, carry and charge |
| Separate Instagram copies | Up to 50 copies on one iPhone, each signed in to its own account, all at once | Paid, fixed term; each account needs its own login details |
Dual Facebook and Messenger on iPhone
Facebook works much like Instagram: you can switch between accounts and profiles in the app, one at a time. Messenger has account switching too, with the same one-at-a-time limit. Samsung Galaxy phones have a built-in Dual Messenger setting that adds a second copy of supported messaging apps, but iPhone has no equivalent, and the App Store won't install the same app twice.
Switching is fine for checking a second profile now and then. A social media manager who looks after Facebook alongside Instagram, or a shop phone shared by several staff who each use their own account, needs more accounts signed in together. iClone signs separate copies of Facebook the same way it does Instagram, and the Facebook plan comes with Messenger. The official Facebook and Messenger apps keep working next to the copies.
How to set up multiple Instagram accounts on one iPhone
Everything happens in Safari on the iPhone that will run the copies, with no Mac, PC or jailbreak. iClone doesn't ask for your Apple ID or your Instagram passwords; you sign in inside each copy yourself.
Because the copies are signed for your device rather than with a free Apple ID, there's no 7-day expiry and no weekly re-signing. Plans run for a fixed term and don't renew automatically. During the term you get compatible updates, reinstalls after deleting the app or resetting the phone, and support.
On the iPhone that will run the copies, open iClone's Instagram page in Safari and choose the Multi-clone plan and a term.
Confirm the device when prompted. Safari installs a one-time profile so the site can read the iPhone's device ID (UDID), which the copies are signed for. Then pay.
Watch the signing progress on your order page and, when it's done, install the copies by following the instructions shown there.
Open each copy and sign in to a different account, or create a new account inside that copy. Add accounts copy by copy as your shop, your niches or your client list grows.
Tips for keeping many Instagram accounts organized
- Put one account in each copy. Every account then stays signed in in its own app, and you never have to switch inside a copy.
- Group the copies in Home Screen folders by job, such as Shop, Brands, Clients and Personal, and keep a short list of which account lives in which copy and in what position.
- Give every account a clear profile photo and name, so a glance at the profile tab tells you where you are before you post, comment or reply to a DM.
- Keep your personal account in the official App Store Instagram and work accounts in the copies, so the two never mix.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for every account in Instagram's settings, and keep backup codes and login details in a password manager.
- Keep each account's email address or phone number working. Instagram may ask for a code from it when you sign in again, for example after a reinstall.
- If your brands post on Threads, use the Threads that comes with the Instagram plan rather than setting up something separate.
Before you start
- Every account is subject to Instagram's or Facebook's terms, and whether an account is restricted is the provider's decision. iClone doesn't create accounts and can't guarantee that any account won't be restricted.
- Each copy keeps its own login and data on the iPhone, but Instagram and Facebook can still link accounts on their own servers under their own rules.
- Each account needs its own login details, such as an email address or phone number you can still reach.
- Changes to iOS, to certificates or to Instagram itself can stop a copy from working for a while. During your term you can reinstall the current compatible version from your order page, and iClone support can help.
- A factory reset deletes the apps and everything stored on the phone. After reinstalling, you sign in again, and anything that was only on the phone, such as unposted drafts, is gone.
Frequently asked questions
How many Instagram accounts can I have on one iPhone?
The Instagram app holds five accounts that you switch between, one at a time. With separately installed copies there's no five-account ceiling: iClone's Multi-clone plan puts up to 50 copies of Instagram on one iPhone, each signed in to its own account and all signed in at once. Current plans are listed on iClone's Instagram page.
Can I be signed in to two Instagram accounts at the same time?
In the official app you can add both, but only one is open at a time and you switch to reach the other. With a copy of Instagram, both stay signed in, each in its own app, and you move between them like any two apps. Two is just the start; add copies as you need more accounts.
Is there a dual Instagram app for iPhone?
Not a built-in one. Some Android phones can duplicate apps with a system setting, but iPhone has no equivalent and the App Store installs each app only once. On iPhone, dual Instagram means a separately signed copy of Instagram installed next to the official app. iClone offers Instagram as a Multi-clone plan, so you can go well beyond two.
Does the Instagram plan include Threads?
Yes. The Instagram Multi-clone plan comes with Threads, which is handy if your brands or clients post there too.
Can I run two Facebook or Messenger accounts on iPhone?
In the official apps you switch between accounts, one at a time. For several accounts signed in together, iClone signs separate copies of Facebook, and the Facebook plan comes with Messenger.
Do I need to delete the Instagram app I already have?
No. The copies install as separate apps, so the App Store version stays on your iPhone and keeps working.
Do I need a computer or a jailbreak, and do the copies expire after 7 days?
No. Everything happens in Safari on the iPhone. The copies are signed for your device rather than with a free Apple ID, so there's no 7-day expiry and no weekly re-signing. Plans run for a fixed term and don't renew automatically.
Are the accounts kept separate from each other?
On the phone, yes. Each copy has its own app ID and its own data, so logins and on-phone data don't mix. Instagram can still link accounts on its own servers under its own rules, and every account follows Instagram's terms.
